Mia Oberländer was born in Ulm in 1995 and lived in Kassel and Valencia before moving to Hamburg in 2015 to study illustration with Anke Feuchtenberger, specialising in graphic storytelling. Her debut graphic novel «Anna» (Edition Moderne) was awarded the renowned Berthold Leibinger Comic Prize and a youth literature prize. It has been translated into several languages. Her second graphic novel «Saloon» (Edition Moderne) will be out in stores on November 18th 2025. Her work has been published in the German edition of LE MONDE diplomatique, the French daily newspaper Libération or the New York Times, among others. She occasionally teaches at various universities, including the HfG in Karlsruhe and the Folkwang UdK in Essen or the HAW Hamburg. Oberländer has been working for the Hamburg Comic Festival since 2019.
